Stocks
Stocks are the accumulation — what builds up or depletes over time in a system.
- Active User Accounts — the population of engaged members (not merely registered)
- Shared Knowledge Capital — wikis, tutorials, man-pages, scripts, lore accumulated in the system
- Technical Infrastructure Stock — server capacity, disk space, available services (Gopher, Gemini, IRC, email, git)
- Community Trust & Social Capital — the relational fabric; reputations, norms, care
- Administrator Capacity — the volunteer-hours, skills, and energy of the sysadmins
- Cultural Identity / Ethos — the "spirit of tilde.club", the ethic of small-web, non-commercial collaboration
Inflows
Inflows are what feed stocks — what causes them to grow.
- New users signing up → feeds Active User Accounts
- Members publishing content, writing wikis, sharing scripts → feeds Knowledge Capital
- Donations, grants, hardware → feeds Infrastructure Stock
- Positive social interactions, mentoring, IRC culture → feeds Social Capital & Trust
- New admins volunteering, skill transfer from experienced members → feeds Admin Capacity
- Counter-cultural appeal; disillusionment with corporate platforms → feeds Cultural Identity
Outflows
Outflows are what drain stocks
- User churn (life changes, platform fragility, boredom) → drains Active Users
- Link rot, unmaintained pages, forgotten wikis → drains Knowledge Capital
- Hardware failure, cost of hosting, admin burnout → drains Infrastructure
- Conflict, exclusion, bad actors → drains Social Capital
- Admin fatigue, lack of succession planning → drains Admin Capacity
- Commercialisation pressure, "normalising" to Web 2.0 norms → drains Cultural Identity
Reinforcing Feedback Loops (R — amplifying, for good or ill)
- R1 — "The Community Flywheel" (virtuous) More active users → more interesting content & IRC conversations → more new users attracted → more active users.
- R2 — "Knowledge Begets Knowledge" (virtuous) More shared knowledge → lower barrier to learning *nix → more capable users → more knowledge contributed → deeper shared knowledge.
- R3 — "Admin Burnout Death Spiral" (vicious) Admin capacity declines → services degrade → users leave → fewer contributors → admin feels unsupported → admin capacity declines further.
- R4 — "Counter-Cultural Amplification" (virtuous) Corporate web gets worse (surveillance, enshittification) → disillusionment grows → more people seek alternatives → Tildeverse grows in cultural relevance → counter-cultural identity strengthens → attracts more disillusioned users.
Balancing Feedback Loops (B — stabilising, regulating)
- B1 — "Membership Governance" If a tilde grows too fast → admin capacity is overwhelmed → signups are paused or waitlisted → growth slows. (tilde.club famously hit this limit immediately in 2014.)
- B2 — "Code of Conduct Regulation" Toxic behaviour increases → community trust erodes → codes of conduct are enforced → bad actors removed → trust stabilises.
- B3 — "Server Resource Saturation" More users consume disk/CPU → performance degrades → user experience worsens → user retention falls → population self-limits.
- B4 — "Fork & Federate" When a single tilde is overloaded or philosophically divergent → new tildes spawn → load distributes across the tildeverse → no single node monopolises.
System Traps
Pathological archetypes are lurking in this system.
- Tragedy of the Commons — Shared server resources (disk, bandwidth, compute) over-consumed by power users; no pricing signal exists to regulate this
- Shifting the Burden — Admins fix symptomatic problems (restart services, ban spammers) rather than building governance infrastructure; the fundamental solution (succession planning, distributed admin) is deferred
- Drift to Low Performance — As active users slowly leave, the standard for "acceptable activity level" quietly drops; the community normalises declining engagement
- Success to the Successful — Larger, more established tildes (tilde.town, tilde.team) attract more users and more contributors, while smaller tildes struggle to reach critical mass
- Addiction — Community members become dependent on a single charismatic admin; when that admin burns out, withdrawal is catastrophic
