Wardrobe updates
Over the years, I have gradually gotten more interested in fashion. For a long time, I almost exclusively bought clothes at thrift stores. I liked saving money and avoiding the environmental impact of new materials, but it severely limited my in my wardrobe options.
Now that I make a steady income, I’m okay with spending more on clothes. I try to buy high-quality, well-sourced materials where possible, and everything I get I keep for a long time. Even so, I’m still fairly frugal (maybe even cheap), so I try to buy on sale, and I add to my wardrobe at a slow & steady rate.
I only have a vague notion of what style I’m working toward. For a while, I was just trying to put together a good set of basic casual wear that could be mixed and matched together. One morning, though, I woke up with a vision of a more classic look, maybe out of the earlier half of the 20th century.
I don’t really have a great fashion vocabulary to describe it, so my notions are still vague. But I know I want something a little old-fashioned, while still looking casual and breezy. I spent time looking at different items, trying to narrow down what I had in mind. There’s a lot out there that’s close to what I want but not quite there. I do know that I want to get more pants (or perhaps “slacks”) with pleats, a beige topcoat, and maybe even a waistcoat.
I still feel like I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to fashion. I’d like to have a more coherent vision of what I’m going for. But since I move pretty slow on building up my wardrobe, I can take my time building up knowledge in tandem with it.
How often do you buy new clothes?
Do you have a vision for your wardrobe?
Do you have any advice for me about clarifying my vague notions or achieving my look?
