[12:01:42] <Calamitous> Hello!
[12:01:51] <greymtr> Okay logs are back up :D
[12:02:01] <Calamitous> Awesome, thanks!
[12:02:10] <greymtr> @Calamitous did we have a reboot recently ?
[12:02:34] <Calamitous> Yep. We had one yesterday to upgrade the server, and one two days ago for system updates.
[12:03:15] <greymtr> ahh thats good to know
[12:03:45] <greymtr> not a lot of activity these days huh ?
[12:04:26] <Calamitous> Well, it comes and goes. :slightly_smiling_face: We have more active bloggers now, but not as many new users
[12:05:03] <Calamitous> I’ve been thinking of a couple new odds and ends to drum up interest, especially now that we have more server power to work with.
[12:05:46] <greymtr> whoah, new features ?
[12:06:18] <Calamitous> LOL Yeah, I do poke around from time to time, I just don’t publicize it much.
[12:06:29] <Calamitous> Did you have any thoughts of what you’d like to see?
[12:06:38] <Calamitous> I’m always open to suggestion
[12:06:48] <greymtr> not really :p
[12:07:13] <greymtr> there were ideas for a mud like a long time ago .... that'd be something nice to see
[12:07:34] <greymtr> but thats like a HUUUGE load of work i'm guessing so meh
[12:07:45] <Calamitous> Yeah, it never really got off the ground. It’s a lot of work to get going.
[12:08:19] <greymtr> community based activity ideas are hard to come up with
[12:08:32] <Calamitous> I installed pennmush a while back in case someone just wanted to build a MUD, instead of writing MUD/MUSH software, but I don’t know if many people were aware of it
[12:08:54] <Calamitous> I could do SMAUG or Deku or any of the other MUD bases, if someone’s interested
[12:09:19] <greymtr> hopefully there're folk with enough time on their hands :p
[12:09:29] <Calamitous> Yeah, that takes time too :slightly_smiling_face:
[12:09:54] <greymtr> folks over at tilde.town have a gopher hole and i've been envious of that :D
[12:09:55] <Calamitous> I was also thinking about putting together a little command-line forum, or bulletin board. IRC is nice, but it’s very real-time… everyone has to be on at the same time to chat.
[12:10:25] <Calamitous> gopher hole? I’ll admit, gopher is one of the old-school techs I’ve never had a chance to mess with
[12:11:39] <greymtr> i'm totally up for the command line forum idea
[12:11:56] <greymtr> sounds really neat
[12:12:22] <Calamitous> Yeah, I think it would really help foster communication
[12:13:24] <Calamitous> I’ve looked around for some prebuilt software, but most of it is either huge (ie. would require a separate server) or poorly supported (I tried messing with bbj, but I couldn’t even figure out how it was supposed to be installed)
[12:15:07] <Calamitous> My thought was that I’d knock together a little something and let others contribute, if they’re interested
[12:15:34] <greymtr> yeah i was thinking along similar lines
[12:15:53] <greymtr> a full blown forum software sounds like overkill :P
[12:16:14] <Calamitous> I’ll probably do something lightweight in Ruby, since that’s he language I know best, but I’m open to suggestion
[12:17:01] <Calamitous> I’m still debating whether to make a set of scripts that manipulate a shared file, or just go ahead and make an actual server out of it
[12:19:05] <greymtr> former seems to embody the spirit of the community I guess :P
[12:19:10] <Calamitous> I’ll take a look at gopher, too. I’ve heard it floating around, I’ve just never studied it.
[12:20:10] <Calamitous> Yeah, that’s where I was leaning. :slightly_smiling_face: Server makes it easier to manage bad actors, though, As long as it’s jsut on the server and everybody’s reasonably well behaved though, that could work.
[12:23:19] <greymtr> i doubt things could get ugly here
[12:23:47] <greymtr> we adhere to the one rule of the server
[12:24:14] <greymtr> i mean i think its the only rule, idk
[12:24:48] <Calamitous> Oh? I’m curious what your take on it is :slightly_smiling_face: I’ve tried to keep the rules pretty lightweight
[12:25:14] <Calamitous> “Don’t be a jerk” is about the only one I can think of that I’ve made explicit
[12:26:27] <greymtr> and thats a pretty good one i guess
[12:27:17] <greymtr> we can be reasonable people and we'll try our best to do that
[12:27:40] <Calamitous> Sounds like exactly what I was hoping to see.
[12:28:02] <greymtr> i guess having a fixed amount of storage per user would prevent abuse in the future though
[12:29:38] <Calamitous> Well, we just doubled our storage, so that’s not as much of a concern now
[12:30:20] <Calamitous> We have had a few spammers/malware distributors come in and try to start shenanigans, but pretty much most everyone that’s shown up for a legitimate account has been pretty cool
[12:31:13] <greymtr> we got attacked ??
[12:31:20] <Calamitous> Oh, a few times.
[12:32:06] <Calamitous> It’s one of the reasons I set up an auto-blocker for IP addresses that are spamming our SSH accounts trying to guess passwords.
[12:32:15] <Calamitous> I’ve blocked about 4,500 IPs so far.
[12:32:57] <Calamitous> It’s just part of the cost of putting a server out on the big bad internet
[12:33:33] <greymtr> sounds hard
[12:33:38] <Calamitous> One time our provider shut us down because someone was distributing malware from the server
[12:33:48] <greymtr> oh that was 2016 feb right ?
[12:33:59] <Calamitous> Yeah, around then, iirc
[12:35:14] <Calamitous> It’s more time-consuming that anything else. One of the reasons I started Ctrl-C.club was so that folks could get on and play around with software and servers without having to deal with all the stupidity that goes along with it. :)
[12:35:39] <greymtr> and thank you so much for that
[12:35:46] <greymtr> i love this server :P
[12:36:14] <Calamitous> Hey no worries. As long as people are learning and having fun, I’m happy to keep it going.
[12:37:37] <greymtr> okay i've g2g ttyl some other time ! [ its like 11 pm here ! ]
[12:37:41] <Calamitous> And thank YOU, btw, for putting the logger together. I look at it pretty frequently :)
[12:37:42] <greymtr> keep up the good work !
[12:38:03] <Calamitous> Sure thing. :) Wow, It’s 11:30 AM here, I’m about to go grab some lunch :
[12:38:14] <Calamitous> Thanks, will do!
