Obra poética II, by Jorge Luis Borges

Collected Poems II

Cover of the book

5/5 stars.

My favorite poetry book. Also important to me, since it was my introduction to poetry. Until then, poetry escaped me, and didn't understand its appeal. I loved reading those lenghty, fun fantasy sagas, or those science fiction novels, but poetry? Never. So boring.

I mean, look at the cover. It looks incredibly dull, especially when you are a kid.

I ended up reading it eventually. I must have been desperate for something to read, slowly going through the books on my family's shelves, looking for something to read. And then I found out Borges was all about labyrinths, knife fights, time, tigers, and mirrors. Nowadays I mainly dig his short stories, but I will read the occasional poem here and there.

It's a lengthy compilation. I won't pretend that I like all of the poems. I don't know what my man was thinking when he wrote Para las Seis Cuerdas, for example. I just skip those. Maybe they'll make sense to me in some years. Behold now, a blurry picture of Límites:

shitty picture showing Limites, from Borges.

Limits There is a line of Verlaine that I will not be able to remember. There is a nearby street forbidden to my steps, there is a mirror that has seen me for the last time, there is a door I have closed until the end of the world. Among the books in my library (I am looking at them) there is one that I shall never open again. This summer I will be fifty years old; death wears me away, relentless.

I wonder if among the books I have listed here there is one already widowed to my eyes, never to be read again. Probably Atomic Habits.
