Second, it follows that art in general represents within capitalist society a positive human value – a 'model of human freedom', as Berger put it – to be supported and nourished. I do not mean by this that all art is 'good' or beneficial to humanity. Some may indeed do more harm than good, such as Rudyard Kipling's colonialist poem 'The White Man's Burden', D. W.
