This is a Delta Green scenario for 2-5 players. The adventure takes the player characters through a small murder mystery in an isolated mountain town. Player characters are intended to be outsiders to Delta Green and will likely be recruited after this adventure, should they survive.
Five days ago, Arnold Klein was found dead on the side of the road in the Malice Outskirts by Laura McKinney near her farm. The police opened an investigation into the death, but didn't release any specific details on the injuries found on the man. Within a few days, the police had found and arrested a suspect, Nathaniel Porter. This afternoon, another body has turned up at Hallowhouse Funeral Home. The second victim, Janice Halloway has some connection to the first victim in that she was preparing the body right before she was killed. The police are treating this second killing as a copycat in order to save face, though privately they have reached out to the FBI in order to have a serial killer specialist sent to the town. The game begins the day after Halloway was found.
Janice Halloway and Arnold Kelin are completely innocent and were unaware of any unnatural forces working in their small town. In their call to the FBI, the local police mentioned some weirdness on the security footage of the Halloway death, so they sent a Delta Green agent instead of a serial killer specialist. They arrive in Malice the morning of play beginning. While it is typical to send more agents to incidents that haven't resolved themselves, it was decided that one agent should suffice, since it's a small town and they should be able to rely on the help of the local police somewhat, since it's presenting as gristly murders.
Arnold Klein was killed in a ritual gone wrong by Alicia Alderline, who has been working on deciphering a translation of the Necronomicon. The ritual she was attempting would enable her to travel backwards in time and inhabit her younger self. She intends to use this ritual to prevent her parents from being sacrificed by her grandfather who was trying to summon something terrible from Outside to grant him eternal life. His plan failed and was never brought to the attention of Delta Green or MAJESTIC. When Arnold Klein's body was dumped, Alicia realized she'd made a huge mistake. Evidence of her ritual was still on the body and she needed to disfigure the victim further to remove that evidence after killing anyone who would have seen it. Her next targets are the local medical examiner and doctor in Malice, Dr. Elwood Burne and the woman who first found the body, Laura McKinney. After the witnesses are taken care of, she's intending to continue her research into the time travel ritual.
