Main / Getting Started Guide

So, you got that shiny new registration email from the admins, and you're wondering what to do next. Fear not, my friend, for you are in the right place.

You must have submitted your SSH public key in the registration form. To log onto the server, you need your private key (the key file (by default under ~/.ssh/) with the same name, without the .pub). To log in, run:
$ ssh -i <path to public key> yourusername@example.tilde

For ctrl-c.club and your private key at ~/.ssh/id_rsa, that would be:
$ ssh -i .ssh/id_rsa yourusername@ctrl-c.club

Replace 'yourusername' with, well, your username ^^
Later on you can set up an ssh config file? to be able to just do:
$ ssh ctrl-c.club
with your username and key information stored in a neat little file under ~/.ssh/. Pretty cool right?

If you lost/don't have access to your ssh keys for any reason, don't worry. Send an email to the admin (with the same email you put in the form, for verification) and they'll help you fix it. You'll probably have to generate a new ssh key pair and share the public key to them. Tilde admins are just people running these servers, and you may have to wait for a day or longer to get a reply (again, it can be instant too). So please be patient :)
When you have that sorted out, perform the above steps with the new key.

Alright, now you should see your prompt change to the remote one running on Ctrl-C. Welcome! Say hi on Iris :D

Now, you can do a lot of stuff. Open mutt to check your email, use any of the available IRC clients (irssi, weechat...), and much more. Here are some relevant articles for the first things you'd want to set up and get familiar with:

  • How To Email - a guide for using the mail program. mutt is more feature-rich, but as this article points out, not that intuitive. Try running it anyway though.
  • ~loghead's CLI-100 - ~loghead's notes on Linux commands. You could also check the Linux first steps? page :)
  • How to IRC? - a guide for making your first IRC connection. Do join the #ctrl-c channel and say hi!

That's about it for an intro. Have fun and keep learning!
